Alonson de Mudarra (1508-1580)

The Complete Edition by Ut Orpheus

A spanish vihuelist and composer. He was brought up in Guadalajara in the household of the third and fourth dukes of Infantando. Later he worked in that court and since 1546 in the cathedral of Seville. In 1568 he became the canon of the cathedral of Seville and he was elected Major Domo of the cathedral.Mudarra's vihuela tablature Tres libros de musica en cifras para vihuela was published in Seville in 1546. The book contains more than 70 compositions for vihuela, pieces for song and vihuela and four fantasies, a pavana and a galliard and variations from theme Guardame las vacas for a four course renaissance guitar. Mudarra's vihuela music is also played with modern classical guitar. The most famous one is "Fantasia que contrahaze la harpa en la manera de Ludovico", which imitates the echo of the harp of the harpist of king Ferdinand V, Ludovico. The work contains very daring dissonances and it is the first printed works, which contain the descending phrygian tetrachord, which is now considered a hallmark of the Andalusian style.
